Update On Hosted Site Restoration

Instead of trying to process requests one at a time, we have started copying sites that are in our backups on to the live servers.

We have done about 15,000 and have another 10,000 to copy over.

Once that is done, we will get all of the accounts into our system and you will be able to request a password.  We should have that ready to go on Wednesday.

On Wednesday (not before), you can request your password change here: https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/requestChangePassword

If on Wednesday you do not see your site live, please let us know and we will try and help figure out the status.

SFTP for Hosted Websites May Be Unavailable Tonight While We Increase Our Data Storage

We are increasing our data storage for hosted web sites as we prepare to speed up the restoration of sites.

You may find you are not able to SFTP to your site tonite.  Your data is safe and still viewable.

This does not effect Mailing Lists or World Connect.

We appreciate your patience while we increase our disk size.

Homepages and Freepages URLs Are Working Again

Homepages Hosted Sites

If you had a homepages hosted web site (all of which should be restored), you will find your hompages URL will work.

For example, if you site is ~aihbt:

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aihbt

now works, as does

http://sites.rootsweb.com/~aihbt

You can also use https if you prefer:

https://homepages.rootsweb.com/~aihbt/

Freepages Hosted Sites

If you had a freepages hosted site (and your site has been restored) you should be able to get to your content again.

For example, if your account is gillespiehistory and if you use the URL:

http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~gillespiehistory/genealogy

You will be taken to the contents of your genealogy_html directory.  Alternatively, you  can also use the old URL:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gillespiehistory

which will automatically redirect you to the new version of the URL. Just substitute the name of your account into the URL.

All of the old URLs will work and redirect to the new versions, you may use which ever one you wish:

You may use https with the new version of the URLs, but not the old version.

https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~gillespiehistory/history

We have no plans to make https work with the old freepages URLs.

Hosted Web Sites: Downloading The Contents of Your RootsWeb WebSite

While we are still bringing hosted web sites back online you can now download the contents of what was on your site for you to use.  The contents of your site were zipped up on or around July 25, 2018.

First, go to Request Download Links and enter the email that you believe your hosted website was under.

You will receive an email with text that looks like:

This email address was used to request the downloadable links for one or more administrator accounts for a web site hosted at Rootsweb.
If you did not make this request, you may safely ignore this message.

Below are links that you can use to download your web sites for accounts linked to this email address:

Download web site link: vasmyth
https://acom-rootsweb-sites.s3.amazonaws.com/www/vasmyth.zip?AWSAccessKeyId=<stuffremoved>

Download web site link: vabedfor
{We are still processing this website. Try again in a week or two.}

These links will expire in 6 months.

Sincerely, the Rootsweb Team

If there is a link, you may download by clicking on the link.  If not, we are still processing.  We have processed all sites that have a size of 10G or less.  The rest we are working on.

Getting into the new version of your hosted web site.

Not all sites are available yet!  But we are working on them.

First, you will need to reset your password.

Go to: https://useraccount.rootsweb.com/websites/requestChangePassword

And enter the email address where you received this email.

If you don’t see the email, check your spam folder. Click on the link and follow the steps to reset your password.

You must click the box to accept the Terms and Conditions and Privacy Statement.

Once you have done that, you can access your site or sites.

We do not support fileman any longer, and will not be bringing it back.

You may use any FTP client to access the site. This short video will show you how to use FileZilla to access your site.

https://www.ancestry.com/academy/course/connect-rootsweb-filezilla

The host you will be connecting to is:

sftp://sitesuser.rootsweb.com

You must connect using SFTP!

You can find your site using two different URLs

https://www.rootsweb.com/~sitename

or

https://sites.rootsweb.com/~sitename

A New Set of RootsWeb Hosted Web Sites Are Live

In addition to all of the previously released sites that you will find here: RootsWeb Hosted Web Sites we have added the following.  It will take a while to reach all of the owners of these pages, so I wanted to publish the list.  More are coming,  so if your site is not on this list, we are working on them. Also, we are working to speed up this process.  Like you, we want these pages up and viewable.

How to ask for your RootsWeb Hosted Site to be restored

If your hosted site has not been restored yet, you can fill out a form and request it.  And about 98% of all the sites have not been restored as of today. This includes homepages, freepages, and gen web sites of all types.

How do you know if your site has been restored?

If your site is ~xyz123  go to http://sites.rootsweb.com/~xyz123

If your site is there, you can go to Request Hosted Site Password and request your password be reset.  You will also be agreeing to Terms of Service.  Even if you have an old password or a mailing list password, you need to do this, or you won’t be able to access your count.

If you don’t see your site — it hasn’t been restored yet.

How do I ask for my site to be restored?

If you want it back, go to: Restore RootsWeb Hosted Website form and fill it out.  Make your best guesses if you don’t know all the information.

Will restoration be immediate?

NO!  It will take 2 to 4 weeks.  Everything has to be scanned and moved to a new server.

Will you get an email saying we are working on it?

No.  We will email you if we can’t find it. We will email you when it is back.  Or check the url. (see above)

My old URL was different

We will be bringing back the old types of URLs.  But our first goal is to reunite you with your content as soon as we can.
